With respect to non-essential items, I still believe that the old adage holds true:

“If you can’t pay cash for it now, you can’t afford it.”

Personally, I only ever use my credit card for online transactions, and even then, I only do so when I have sufficient cash in my savings account to transfer over and cover the payment.

That said, I realize that it must be more difficult for those who are married and have children, since their expenditure requirements are much more extensive than what mine are as a single man.
