Hi Paul. It would seem to depend upon who you want to listen to. Whereas some economists are saying just what you're saying, others are saying that "when" the economy improves and jobs are created again, that with more people off the unemployment rolls and paying taxes on their own income again that this budget can make a lot of sense. One quote I read from the Los Angeles Times was "Many other economists think history supports Obama's argument that the country's overall prosperity has generally increased when those in the middle did better."

I guess we'll see, since I'm betting the budget is going to get passed, with some changes here and there. Plus, no war in Iraq to fund anymore, should help in the long run.

"By the way, the Republicans are saying taxes are going up for everyone..."

They will. Even if Obama confiscated *all* the taxable income of those making more than $250K, it can't come close to paying for his budget objectives. Then there's his cap-and-trade emissions tax, which will have the inevitable effect of raising everyone's utility bills...

The numbers just don't add up.

So do I, Sire, and right now, since the Democrats control both houses of Congress, it's a pretty safe bet that he'll get his way.

No, but I can just imagine. Honestly though I can't see the necessity for having assault weapons in the home. I hope everyone supports Obama and shouts the gun lobby down on this one.

I just read about it. He put the ban back on assault weapons, which was originally passed under President Clinton, and President Bush let expire in 2004. I support this, and though the guy lobby probably won't, what's hoped is that it will help stem the transfer of these weapons to Mexico, as I'm not sure you've heard what's been going on there between law enforcement and drug cartels.

I can agree with that sentiment, about taxing bad habits and such like smoking etc. As for the guns, I can't believe we heard it Downunder before you guys did.

I haven't heard of any gun issues yet, but I'll keep my ears open for it.

The thing here is that there are states rights, so they get to tax in their way, and the federal government taxes in its way. There are some taxes I'd eliminate because I think they're unfair, but some I'd probably levy more because, well, they don't promote healthy living. But that's me.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the Federal Govt. collects it and then distributes it to the States, but I do know that because of the financial crisis less people are spending and they aren't making as much money. They do get it from a lot of other avenues though, like decreasing the speed limit which just in our state almost doubled the revenue and the year isn't even over yet.

I hear Obama has done something about the legality of having high powered weapons. I bet that went down well with the gun lobby.

We do, but it's only for state taxes. The state has a tax, then each country adds its own tax.

Do you guys have a GST (Goods and Services Tax)? I know that when our Government first introduced it the GST turned into a real cash cow for them.
