That is so true. The retirees are the ones that are truly hit the hardest. Tell you the truth, our Government forces us to pay into Super as part of our pay so I reckon they should have some sort of guarantee, as I would much prefer the money to go into bricks and mortar.

Well, there are also people who thought their retirement was safe and suddenly found themselves possibly having to work again because more than half of their portfolio was gone. That's got to be scary, no matter how you look at it.

That is so true Mitch. If only people did not panic and sell off their shares it may not have dived as badly as it did. Of course there are those who didn't have a choice because they borrowed money to buy shares, something that I would never do.

I think with or without gold, most of our portfolios are down pretty badly. Thing is, I have time, and I know this won't last.

I had picked some gold Exchange Traded Funds when they were trading around $800 or so in the market 1.5 years back... I exited around $1000+ earlier this year. At that rate it seemed okay :) I effectively used http://forecasts.org/ for gold forecasts but now prediction looks impossible. I think below 700 it should be still actractive as it is a major hedge against inflation and volatility. My equity portfolio is 40% down from its capital so... :(

I've always believed as you do, Caleb, so I'm not invested in gold either. I've thought about it, though.

I always figured gold is/was the elite investment...I especially like the concept of e-gold which to me is basically a paypal-type thing that using actual gold weight holdings for paying.

"If the US currency was to completely collapse and chaos reigned over the world, bullion or gold coins would be great to have.
" ... may be coming soon :(

Now would be the worst time to sell your stocks. Sure they have dived but history shows that they will climb again. If anything now is the best time to buy stocks, and if I had the money that is what I would be doing. In fact I have bought a few shares in one of my stocks and have sold it at a profit along with some of the existing stock so that I am not showing a profit. I have then bought extra shares as it dropped again. I plan to do this several times until I have wiped out all the shares at the higher price gaining a whole lot more shares at the lower price. When the shares reach the original value I would have made a sizable profit.
